Columbia Omi-Heat Circuit Breaker Softshell Review

Categories:Gear | Gear Review

Spring has finally spring and its time to start thinking about spring cleaning of your gear closets.  As you pack up everything you have outgrown or no longer fits as well as all of those out dated gear gadgets that are no longer cool. One Item you need to think about replacing is your boring winter coat. Columbia’s Omi Heat Electric coats are simply stated AWESOME.

So what makes this jacket so awesome you ask? Well for starters it comes with an instruction manual, batteries and a computer chip. That right there should set of your inner geek alarms. So what is all of this about and why the batteries and a manual. The Omi-Heat Electric line of products allows the wearer to have extra heat pumped into their jacket via a controlled battery pack. Think of it as a new aged heating blanket that’s much smaller and can fit into coats, boots, and gloves. There is a button on the outside of the coat that allows you to regulate the warmth based upon three levels. Low Medium and High. At the low level a single battery will last up to 4 hours.  The Circuit Breaker Softshell happens to come with two batteries. That’s up to 8 hours of extra warmth for your core while you are out playing in the snow. The batteries also have a USB port to allow you to change your USB devices such as smart phones or GPS hand held devices.

Moving to the inside of the jacket it has a special reflective liner that keeps your core warmer by reflecting the heat your body is producing back at your body while wicking away any sweat allowing a constant recycling of warmer air inside of the coat. All of the zippers are weather proof and there is even a special liner at the bottom of the coat to help keep all of that warm from leaking out.

I only wish the weather had been a little colder this winter so that I could have been able to really put it to the test.  It is sturdy well made and simply overall a great coat. I was able to wear it out and about and back and forth to work on many occasions and even though I did not need the extra heat It was still a very warm and functional coat.

Overall a great jacket and a great new technology from Columbia. Even with all of this coats bells and whistles it will set you back a few dollars retailing at $850.  To find out more about this product you can find it on the Columbia website.
