The mountains are calling and I must go

Are you enjoying the weather as much as I have been? I wanted to update everyone on where things are whats going on and what is coming up.

Merchandise
I have been working with a print shop to get some awesome t-shirts made.  I am going to be getting a run of men’s and women’s shirts. To view what the men’s shirts look like you can head on over here. I have not received the final look of the ladies shirts yet. It will be coming soon. The Men’s shirts cost $15 – $17 based on location shipped and Sizes. The shipping is part of the cost of the shirt.   If you would like to preorder a shirt you can email me directly or you can do it through my website.  You can also buy awesome Hiking the Trail Stickers here. They are $4 each.  I am also looking into getting patches made. All funds raised from the sales of the merchandise will go towards funding my trip and a portion of the proceeds will go to TheDustyCamel.org Young Explorers Grant.

Exciting News
I have been talking to several friends on twitter and we have agreed to all get together in June / July of 2013 and hike the John Muir Trail. The John Muir Trail is the premier hiking trail in the United States. The trail starts in America’s treasure, Yosemite National Park, and continues 220ish miles through the Ansel Adams Wilderness, Sequoia National Park, King’s Canyon National Park, and ends at the highest peak in continental United States, Mount Whitney at 14,496 ft.  We plan to hike the trail in 2 weeks allowing folks to take time off from work and or family to come together on the trail. Most of us have never actually met in person but have only communicated via email, twitter, and Facebook. Right now I am sure you are thinking what about the Appalachian Trail. Nothing has changed. I am still going to be thru-hiking in 2013. I will just be adding a cross country flight, 2 extra weeks, and 220+ miles to my schedule. If I have not completed the AT which most likely I will not by the time I will need to be in California for the JMT I will grab a ride to the closest airport and head of into the west. Once I complete the JMT I will fly back catch a ride to the trail and continue where I left off.

The biggest thing about adding in the flights and the extra miles is making sure my gear gets where I need to be and making sure I can get to and from airports and trails. I have not a clue how that will work out at this current moment however I have plenty of time to get it done. One thing about the JMT is you have to have a permit to hike it. Many people will just show up and wait for a slot to open others will apply nearly 6 months in advance for their permits. We plan on going the 6 month route and applying in January for ours.  You can follow our expedition on twitter using the hash tag #JMT2013 and on Facebook at John Muir Trail 2013 .

Gear Updates
I have almost collected all of the gear I will be needing. I still have a few big ticket items to get. Those Items include my light weight 1 person tent and all of my camera equipment. As we get closer to time check out my Youtube channel and the blog for gear reviews and info.

I have already posted many photos on my Facebook account, Flicker account and blog of the gear I will be taking.

Food Update
I have been reading up on current AT thru hikers menus and finding what I like and dislike among the pre packaged freeze dried and dehydrated foods. I have been putting off buying the food mostly due to storage space I know it will take up and some of what I will be taking only has shelf lives of a year or so.  As I get closer to time I will slowly start to collect my food just as I have been doing with my gear. If you would like to donate meals via the donate a meal project you can do so here. A portion of the proceeds will go to TheDustyCamel.org Young Explorers Grant.

Philmont Training
Austin and I are very excited to hit the trail at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico this July and went on a practice hike at Waubonsie state park a few weekends ago. Read the trail review here.

On A closing note just wanted to make sure everyone has been entering all of these awesome gear give aways I have been having on the site. If you have not been you are missing out. There is still time to sign up for the current one that ends tonight and then we start the next one tomorrow morning.

Thank you to everyone who has supported my adventure so far and thank you to those of you who will in the future.

Happy Trails

Adam

Sounds like some great planning and excitement! I had two friends hike the JMT (separately) last August and they both loved it. I also knew of an AT ’10 hiker who did what you are planning to do—so I wouldn’t worry about it. I balked at first for the two weeks thing but then I realized it was when you were going to be at peak thru-hiker performance…you will smoke them all!

Its only 16 miles a day roughly and the gear and supplies will be minimal. Plus like you said I will be in peak thru-hiker performance. It will all go smoothly I am sure.

Was your friend able to complete both?

I hope you are as well Paul. Even if for a few days would love to hike with ya.

The LightHeart tents look very sharp – I’m sure that would work out well.

I am excited to get my hands on one and get it tested out.
