What no car?

I find it quite interesting when talking with folks they are puzzled by the fact that I do not own a car. After work I will wait in the front of the building for my ride. Many folks will come by and are surprised to see me standing there daily. Their puzzled looks are usually followed by the question “Car in the shop?”. I then reply with “Nope don’t have a car just waiting on my ride”. They always answer with “What no car?”.

For many of you not having a car is just a part of life. Where I live having a car is a must unless you have a very loving and willing to compromise girlfriend like I do. I live in Kansas City and every thing is spread out and our public transportation system is pretty much non existent. We do have what the city calls public transportation however it either costs a truck load of money or its not the safest way to travel. If you own a car you can get anywhere in the KC metro area in under twenty minutes. A perfect example is for me to get to the nearest grocery story would take by car 5-10 min. To walk at least an hour or so one way. Everything is spread out and more often than not if you have to get 5 things you have to go to 5 stores of which they are in different areas of the town. If your lucky you might be able to get what you need in the same shopping center.

Once I start to explain that I do not have a car payment, an insurance payment, no gas money fund, or even car repairs eating into my bank account. They sit there for a moment and I can tell they are tallying up how much money I am saving based upon all of the bills they need to pay this month for their own car. Their response to that is “Makes sense… Well Good luck with it…”

I am sure if I told them that I was saving my money to go live in the woods for 6 months it would only hurt my cause to try to explain to them that I am not crazy.

Happy Trails

Pretty awesome. My wife and I share one car (and a scooter). There is really only one valid reason for me to use the car and that is to go to the mountains.

It can be done we are proving that but it has taken some give and take from both of us. I am the same way I hardly really ever need the car unless its for hiking or camping :-D
