Ecco Biom Venture GTX – Gear Review

Categories:Footwear | Gear Review

I took the shoes out of the box and gave them a quick look. Flexing them side to side forward and back. They seemed pretty sturdy but I am always skeptical about trail shoes. I have forever been a boot guy. My favorite pair of boots is an old heavily used pair of ECCO Ulterra Mid GTXs. When Ecco reached out to me earlier this year to test out a brand new pair of trail runners I jumped at the chance to try something new. Maybe these will be the shoes that change my mind.

Testing the Bioms

Testing started as soon as I took them out of the box. I was at work when they arrived and I immediately opened them up looked them over and then put them on. In a couple weeks, I would be heading to Pennsylvania for a week-long backpacking trip on the Laural Highlands Hiking Trail.  While I continued to prepare for the trip I wore the shoes every day. I used them to go to work, walk on treadmills, hike on my local trails etc. There was little to no break in time for the shoes and felt as if they were designed to fit my feet specifically.

I put on the shoes and traveled to Pennsylvania where I met up with three fellow hikers and we headed out into the wilderness of the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail.

Rocky LHHT trail.

A lake the LHHT runs alongside.

One of the many water crossings along the trail.

A mile down and my more to go! The LHHT is very well marked.

We had set up a mid-trip cache of food and gear. I decided to leave my boots there just in case the trail runners were not cutting it for me. After two days of cold mist and muddy conditions, my ankles were begging to become sore.

I can not say that it was a result of the shoes themselves, but I was also carrying a 35lb backpack full of gear food and water. I am also accustomed to having the added ankle support that my boots would provide. I switched out to the boots on the third day.

Not once did I get a blister, the waterproofing kept my feet dry from water crossings and the constant mist.

Since that trip, I have used the shoes on countless hikes, daily use and continue to enjoy every step taken in them.

Closing Thoughts

The ECCO Biom Venture GTX shoes are incredibly comfortable shoe worth checking out if you are in need of a new pair of trail runners. Lightweight, sturdy, and at times you will forget you are even wearing them.  To learn more about the Bioms please check out Ecco’s website.
